We have incorporated the SDS NAS and Virtual SAN into the VxCloud backup strategy. Our offering allows for the Backup software to copy the data while the NAS and SAN provide HA and replication. There is a major cost saving compared to typical backup solutions. We provide multiple copies of the data to be copied and replicated. Error correction and deduplication is included as an additional important feature.

NAS is a common IT term for Network Attached Storage that enables data and file sharing using popular protocols like NFS and CIFS/SMB. iSCSI is typically associated with SAN (Storage Area Networks). NAS storage systems that support NFS, CIFS/SMB and iSCSI are termed “unified” storage. VxCloud provides unified storage designed optimized for high-performance, higher than normal I/O per second (IOPS), data reliability and recoverability. It also increases storage efficiency through thin-provisioning, compression and deduplication.
The VxCloud solution have been fully QA tested and certified for production use. It is in use by hundreds of customers across Amazon EC2, VMware vSphere, and Microsoft Azure environments worldwide today.
VxCloud storage solutions provide various capacities on Azure depending on the back end data store utilized. VxCloud leverages data stores available via Block (Standard or Premium) or Object (Hot or Cool Blob). The following are the maximums (based on current Azure offerings):

  • For Block storage: Capacity limit is determined by the instance size. Capacity limits = 2TB disks x Core count. The instance size determines the core count. The current up limit for Azure is 40TB.
  • For Object Storage: We’re able to support file capacities via Hot and Cool blob storage that are either:
    • The size of the single Azure storage account if only one is required, which gets you to 500TB.
    • Over 500TB when leveraging multiple storage accounts for petabyte-scale storage.
VxCloud SDS leverages data stores available via Block (Standard or Premium) or Object (Hot or Cool Blob). All types of storage can be leveraged on the same Cloud VM.
VxCloud can deploy an active-passive HA pairing with both VM’s residing in an Azure Availability Set for maximum uptime. If one VM goes down, the other takes over. This configuration ensures that during either a planned or unplanned maintenance event or unexpected hardware failure, at least one virtual machine will be available and meet the 99.95% Azure SLA. We replicate between the two for delivering our No Downtime Policy.

Our current HA solution relies on the replication of data between instances. The SDS NAS High Availability feature is based on an active-passive pairing of instances with a 60-second asynchronous data replication cycle. The storage that is presented (i.e. block or blob) does not alter this requirement.
VxCloud encrypts your data while it is at rest and also when it is in motion — we call it 360-degree encryption. VxCloud believes that each business or organization should control the keys to their data — so only you do, not VxCloud, AWS or Microsoft.
VxCloud consultants will perform an online QA session with the client to establish the requirements for software defined storage NAs and Virtual SAN. The storage GUI is easy to use with wizards and is intuitive for cloud storage management. The management software provides simplicity for creating standard mounts including NFS, CIFS/SMB, iSCSI and AFP storage volumes which can be pooled into RAID backed arrays to customize redundancy and performance. Advanced features are also available.
